The beautiful, young geisha Cio-Cio San has renounced her family and surrendered all of her love and faith to her new American husband, Lieutenant Pinkerton. Intoxicated by her innocence, he pledges his love for her ecstatically, only to leave her behind when he returns to America. After waiting patiently for his return, she is met with unbearable heartbreak and, ultimately, the choice between life and honor.
Perhaps the most popular work in all of the operatic canon thanks to its swelling, unabashed melodies and a story that touches the depths of the human soul, Madama Butterfly comes to life on the Academy stage in a stunning and acclaimed production by designer Jun Kaneko that marries the classic with the contemporary.

Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos – Conductor
The Philadelphia Singers Chorale - Women's chorus
MENDELSSOHN - Incidental Music to A Midsummer Night's Dream
RIMSKY-KORSAKOV – Sheherazade
The young Mendelssohn was a polymath who painted, argued philosophy, and devoured the works of Shakespeare and other literary giants. So it was natural that he should take on the task of creating incidental music for the Bard's peerlessly silly comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream: The result was some of the most scintillating music of his career. In his second set of subscription concerts of the season, Maestro Frühbeck de Burgos presents Mendelssohn's entire Incidental Music, complete with soloists and women's chorus, and balances the program with Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherazade, a dazzlingly orchestrated rendering of tales from A Thousand and One Nights.

The program also features the Philadelphia premiere of Steve Reich’s You Are (Variations). Reich is the winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in music. The concert concludes with the Philadelphia premiere of two laude for female chorus from British composer Gavin Bryars’ Cycle Lauda Cortonese. Champagne toasts, sweetly-fragranced camellias and lush soirees fill the glittering salon of famed courtesan Violetta Valéry, the belle of Parisian nightlife. Enter Alfredo, a handsome young nobleman who looks at her one evening with the unmistakable and unapologetic bloom of love. Nothing will ever be the same as their romance deepens before the eyes of his disapproving father, testing their hearts, their character and the bonds of true love.
Verdi's ultra-romantic masterpiece is a visual and musical tour de force featuring rapturous arias and swelling choral works, set against the richly costumed elegance of the Opera Company's original, period production.

Their love is so true and complete that not even death can come between Orphée and Eurydice in this hauntingly beautiful, mythical tale of the supernatural. When Eurydice leaves the living, Orphée is given the chance to bring her back from the Underworld with one condition – he must promise not to look at his beloved until they return to Earth. But will her faith be strong enough to follow him – even when she fears his love is lost?
With stirring melodies of love, longing and redemption, this production marks the Opera Company Premiere of this classic work in the ideally-suited, intimate venue of the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater.
